Chapter 8

Two days later Captain O’Donnell accompanied by two constables, Jack and Peter stood in front of Martin’s cell. One of the constables opened the cell door. O’Donnell stepped in. Martin got off his bunk and stood before the Captain.

“Well did the ole B… He never finished the sentence. The next thing he knew he was lying on his back on the floor with a shattered nose blood running down his face.

He had to roll over and try to sit up. He was choking on his own blood.

The two constables pulled him to his feet, cuffed his hands behind back and put a burlap bag over his head. Blood was now dripping off his chin.

O’Donnell said, “If you say another word, I will beat you half to death.

Grunt if you understand me.”

Martin was vigorously nodding his head and grunting.

The constables dragged Martin out of the station house and threw him unceremoniously in the back of a paddy wagon and locked the door. They climbed into the box and rode off toward the piers.

Throughout all of this Peter and Jack said nothing. The men climbed into one of Alexis’s carriages and followed.

At the docks, Jack, Peter and O’Donnell dragged a blubbering Martin up the gangway onto the ship. William had two Chinese sailors take martin to his cell. There O’Donnell took the hood off and uncuffed him.

Martin fell in a heap to the floor. Upon seeing his brother, he reached out his hands but before he could say anything Peter said, “Don’t say a word, not a word. I’m finished with you.” And he turned and left.

Martin calling out to him, pleading with him but Peter never looked back.

One of the sailors tossed a hand spun smock, pants and wooden clogs at Martin.

Captain Williams said, “Put them on and toss you clothes over here.”

Martin hesitated and looked confused. One of the sailors kicked him hard in the chest.

William said, “Now!”.

The sailor stepped toward Martin then scrambled to shed his clothes and dressed in simple clothing.

As Jack turned to leave, Martin called out, “Please for the love of God, mercy.”

“If you want me to have mercy, I will show you the same mercy you showed to your mother and to the women I love.”

Jack walked through the opened cell door toward Martin.

Martin looked into Jack’s eyes and saw death. He huddled in a ball in a corner. His arms over his face, whimpering.

Jack looked at him with disgust, turned and walked away.

William walked with him and said, “I thought for sure you were going to kill him.”

Jack said nothing as they walked in silence to the stairs leading to the top deck. He said, “I thought I was too. I wanted to wring that sniveling coward’s neck.

If I had taken another step toward him I would have done it but I respect Peter and Alexis too much. That is what saved his life. I’ll hate that little weasel till the day I die.

If he had hurt anyone of those women, I’d have taken him out west and let the Cheyenne slowly skin him alive.
